Welcome to PORTUGAL

Information about PORTUGAL Portugal has a rich seafaring past, superb beach resorts, wistful towns and a landscape covered by olive groves, vineyards and wheat fields. Littered with UNESCO World Heritage sites and graced by one of Europe"s most relaxed and attractive capitals, it also remains refreshingly affordable for the tourist. Portugal has a renowned reputation for hospitality, and the country abounds with romarias (religious pilgrimages), festas (festivals) and feiras (fairs) that bring whole towns to a standstill. At the core of many of these are religious processions. The nation"s best-known musical form is the melancholic fado (songs believed to have originated from the pinings of 16th-century sailors). Seafood and wine both figure prominently on local menus, and dreamy, arabesque forms are the strongest features of local architecture. Portugal has been a member of the EU since the 1980"s and its economical integration is signalled by its ex-prime minister who now heads the European Commission.
